For the next year are you going to focus on disease management or chose to look at health differently?
The way you think about health has long been shaped by a focus on disease management. And how you express health is directly proportional to the way in which you think about health. A person who believes in the ‘fix it’, mechanistic approach to health will by virtue of their belief slowly erode their health choosing to chase and supress signs and symptoms rather than understand why their body created X or Y in the first place. When you focus solely on managing disease, you inadvertently ignore the interconnectedness of your body’s systems and its self-healing potential.
When entering into the allopathic mechanistic approach to health, the body is often treated as a collection of parts that can be “fixed” individually without due regard for the impact the “fix” has on other areas of the body. This leads to external solutions such as medications or surgeries, which aim to suppress or remove symptoms rather than address the root cause. When we focus solely on managing disease, we inadvertently ignore the interconnectedness of the body’s systems and its self-healing potential.
Society has massaged the understanding of health over centuries. It goes like this… if you have no signs or symptoms, you’re healthy. This of course is reinforced by a mother, father, teacher, preacher, care giver, TV, radio, print media and now social media. People grow up believing this society driven definition of health is true – no signs or symptoms means you’re healthy!
But is it true?
True health begins when we stop managing disease and start observing our body, embracing the challenges that come our way and educating ourselves on the power of our body thereby fostering a life of optimal wellbeing. Symptoms are not your enemy; your body doesn’t want to attack itself it wants to defend itself. Your symptoms are messages guiding your conscious mind to areas that warrant your attention and focus – physically, chemically and emotionally.
Health exists on a continuum; we constantly change every nanosecond of our physical existence. This ability to change, to adapt to our environment, is due to our nerve system and our inherent innate intelligence. That same innate intelligence knew how to grow you from cells 0.1mm in diameter to knowing how and when to encase your brain and spinal cord in bone forming your central nerve system; a system vital to your growth and survival. Your innate intelligence also knew to place two arms on the side of your body, grow two ears, two eyes, two legs, a stomach, intestines, heart, gall bladder, liver, pancreas and so much more all in the right place, at the right time, to form you, within nine months. All ‘areas’ of your body working together in a coordinated symbiotic relationship with your nerve system the overarching, and masterful, communicating system.
Genuis.
Taking care of your nerve system then is vital to your health. People are not taught this. Understanding the ways in which chemicals (medications, processed foods, non-organic foods, cleaning products, clothing etc) and your emotions (happy or sad etc) trigger a neurological response and acknowledging the direct relationship between your structure and how you function will enable you to see your body and your health in a more meaningful way where anything is possible. This understanding has you shift your perspective from a reactive to a proactive approach with optimal health as your ultimate goal.
Alternate health, as contrasted with the mechanistic allopathic approach, respects the body’s innate intelligence, this “life force” that sustains and organizes its functions. This philosophy suggests that the body is not only capable of self-healing but thrives when supported by a harmonious environment free from neurological interference. True health emerges when we enhance and create the environment for optimal health rather than combating signs, symptoms and dis-ease.
Here are some practical steps as you journey through the year which will help you attune to your body, ask different questions and take those first steps towards understanding your body more.
1. Consider chiropractic adjustments, which support the nervous system’s role in health. Chiropractors work intricately with your nerve system. Chiropractic is the largest regulated health care profession in the world that uses no drugs or surgery. If you didn’t like someone you saw prior just call someone else! When the teacher is ready the student appears and when the student is ready the teacher appears.
2. Adopt habits that enhance your body such as nutritious food, sunshine, sufficient rest, and consistent movement.
3. Minimize toxins, chronic stress, and harmful thought patterns, which disrupt the body’s innate communication systems.
4. Shift your minds focus. Embrace the idea that symptoms are not enemies but messages from the body, guiding us to areas that need attention and balance. As I always say learn to listen to the whispers your body gives you.
Reframing health as an active expression of wellbeing will empower you to take responsibility for your health journey. When you stop managing disease and start nurturing your body’s innate potential, you not only achieve an optimal expression of health but you also instigate a ripple effect of wellbeing in your family and community.
Observe your body, embrace the challenges, educate yourself. The power to heal and thrive has always been inside you.
