If only more parents knew how to make their own sports drinks for their kids, packed full with electrolytes, from nature, their kid’s performance would no doubt be better and they’d recover faster!
So… we are going to share a secret that we haven’t shared before.. what’s in our kids drink bottles?
But first let me go here…
How many times, at a sporting activity, have you seen kids reach for Powerade, Gatorade, a Red Bull, a Mother, a Monster or a V?
I have… plenty of times.
More often than not it is the advertising that has swept up a kid (and adult) in wanting to drink the same drink as a sporting hero – think All Blacks and Powerade – with little thought being given to the ingredients and the effect on the child’s body and playing ability.
The companies, Red Bull, Coca Cola (Powerade, Mother (made in NZ) and Monster) and Pepsi Cola (Gatorade) that own these brands, or have a stake in them, should make you shudder let alone the ingredients such as: high fructose corn syrup, sucrose and sugar, additives, natural flavours (which aren’t natural!), Aspartame (951), artificial colours, caffeine, sodium benzoate (211), dextrose, wheat derivatives and so forth.
Need I go on…suffice to say these drinks have nothing to do with health and electrolytes and everything to do with spiking sugar levels and then plummeting it. Kids and adults alike cannot function on drinks like these.
So… what are electrolytes and why are they important?
Just some of the more common electrolytes (aka minerals) needed for a body to function include: calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, phosphate and chloride. These crucial minerals have to come from food you eat so your diet must be ‘top notch’ in order to receive them. However, most people aren’t eating an organic and varied diet and as a result eat food devoid of minerals due to current farming practices.
However, you’re not going to find these electrolytes/minerals in any energy drinks… not the type your body requires for health and fitness replenishment.
Electrolytes are given their name because they literally have an ‘electric’ charge. They separate into positive and negative charged ions when dissolved in water. This is important because of how nerve reactions take place – nerves ‘chat’ to one another via chemical exchanges which are dependent on oppositely charged ions, both inside and outside of your cells… that’s crucial! Let’s look at it like this… imagine receiving a phone call during a storm when the line is all static. Would you be able to hear the person on the other end? Short answer is no. And this, figuratively speaking, is how your body responds to electrolyte imbalance. Electrolytes are essential to signal the inside functions.
If you have an imbalance in your minerals (electrolytes) you or your child maybe experiencing:
- Muscle aches, spasms, twitches, weakness
- Restlessness / anxiety
- Headaches / insomnia (inability to sleep)
- Thirsty / dehydration
- Confusion / lack of concentration
- Blood pressure changes / heart palpitations
- Cramps / constipation / diarrhoea
- Joint discomfort / numbness
- Dizziness / fatigue
It’s important than to make sure you are having your electrolytes each day and especially prior to, during and post activity… that’s what we do with our kids.
For years our kids have had only four ingredients in their water bottles and at half time they skip the sweets which unfortunately, are still handed out at higher level sporting fixtures!
Here’s what we add: coconut water, organic freshly squeezed orange juice, vital foods organic colloidal minerals (electrolytes) and vital foods all natural liquid magnesium chloride (electrolyte). A winning combination for performance and recovery!
This is so easy to make.
Our colloidal minerals (electrolytes) have 68+ minerals all essential for nerve transmission and communication and muscle performance, repair and recovery and our magnesium is one of the purest on the market and great for muscle cramps, anxiety, restless sleep and more. If you or your child doesn’t like the taste of the magnesium than you can use it topically on the skin prior to playing sport and have a nice soak in the bath with it afterwards! Both our colloidal minerals and the magnesium are suspended in ultrapure-deionised water. A win-win for your own and your child’s body.
The benefits of incorporating our vital foods minerals / electrolytes into your water bottle at training or competitions and just during the day include:
- Promoting nerve and muscle function
- Maintaining brain health
- Improving bone strength
- Supporting heart health
- Regulating fluid balance
As you can see you don’t need the Powerade’s and Gatorade’s for sports performance… in fact you’d be wise to stay away from them.
Why not make our home tested and proven, on ourselves and our three kids, sports drink instead? We know you and the kids will love it!
