Homemade Toothpaste

by | Recipes

Finally a homemade toothpaste that’s easy to put together with what you may already have in your pantry and it’s great for the whole family too.

Everyone will love the feeling of a fresh mouth after a good brush and best of all you don’t need to use a lot. Use a small spoon to scoop out a little, ideally the size of a pearl, and pop it on your brush. You don’t need to wet your brush prior, dry brushing will be best!

If you haven’t read our article on Commercial Toothpaste: Do we need it? pop over here

Here’s what you need:

  • ½ tsp activated charcoal
  • 2 Tbsp organic coconut oil
  • 2 Tbsp baking soda (aluminium free)
  • 1-2 drops of organic essential oils (see tips below)

Here’s how to put it together:

  1. Gently melt the coconut oil in a small saucepan or double boiler if you have one. Watch closely so it doesn’t boil!
  2. Take off the heat and let it cool for a few minutes
  3. In a small bowl, mix the charcoal and baking soda together.
  4. Once the charcoal and the baking soda are mixed well add the coconut oil and a few drops of your favourite essential oils and mix thoroughly
  5. Pour the mixture into a small container.

Tips:

  1. Store in a cool dry place, I pop ours in our bathroom draw.
  2. The mixture can become hard when cold because of the coconut oil content.
  3. Dry brushing works best, no need to pop your brush under water first.
  4. Charcoal can be messy so make sure you are able to wipe your bathroom bench, sink and your mouth with a towel afterwards!
  5. Our essential oil favourites of ours e.g. wintergreen, rosemary, spearmint, peppermint, tea tree or oregano. Pick one or two of those or chose your own but remember you only need a few drops!
  6. These make great gifts for family.
