Headaches are among the most reported of health challenges. From the occasional tension-type to more complex cluster headaches, many experience headaches without understanding their true origin. Conventional models often pathologize headaches; a “health” system that encourages you to pop a pill to reduce or remove your headache wrongly reinforces the idea that the headache itself is the problem. While the pill may remove the symptom, a more important question often goes unasked: Are headaches really the problem? For most people, unfortunately, the answer is yes.

At Vital Wellbeing, we explore headaches—and other health expressions the body creates—through a unique lens: one that honours the body’s nerve system and innate intelligence, and considers the interplay of physical (MOVE), chemical (EAT), and emotional (THINK) influences on your health and life.

Let’s unpack headaches using our MOVE, EAT, THINK framework and how recognizing the role of the nerve system can support your return to optimal health.

MOVE: Physical Triggers and the Role of Structure

We’ve often written that movement is the essence of life—it’s vital. However, movement can also be a trigger for imbalance when the body is unaligned. Certain types of headaches may be linked to physical exertion or trauma:

  • Exertional headaches: There often follow intense physical activity like weightlifting or running. They may be the body’s way of expressing muscular strain or vertebral misalignment, particularly in the cervical and lumbar spine, where nerve pathways can be affected.
  • Cluster headaches: Less common but cyclical, they may relate to autonomic nervous system imbalances (e.g. digestion, heart rate, respiration).
  • Concussion headaches: Often sport-related, these can disrupt nerve communication and lead to persistent headache concerns.
  • TMJ headache: Originating in the jaw, they impact cranial alignment and can result in tension headaches due to nerve interference.

When structural disruption occurs, the vertebrae may become misaligned, compromising the integrity of your nervous system and affecting your function.

EAT: The Chemical Landscape of Headaches

What we ingest or absorb matters as much as how we move. Chemical stressors—from food and drink to household and beauty products—can act as invisible triggers:

  • Sinus headache: Processed foods high in preservatives, artificial flavours, and sweeteners like aspartame and MSG can contribute to headaches.
  • Toxic headache: Alcohol, particularly red wine, may trigger migraines due to histamines or sulphites.
  • Hormonal headaches: Imbalances in sex hormones, insulin, cortisol, and adrenaline can contribute to headaches.
  • Chemical headache: Products like perfumes, makeup, cleaners, and hair sprays often contain volatile compounds that act as neurotoxins and disrupt internal balance.

These aren’t random occurrences—they are opportunities. They are signs of overwhelm. Removing chemical stressors from your lifestyle, drinking organic wine, making meals from scratch, and supporting hormone balance can help your body express health and may lessen headache frequency.

THINK: Ergonomics, Tech Neck, and the Emotional Landscape

We often underestimate how thoughts influence our physical body. Modern lifestyle habits—technology use, work posture, prolonged sitting—can create tension-type headaches. Add to this the emotional stress of daily life which can further induce headaches:

  • Posture headache: “Tech neck” from looking down at screens alters spinal curves, increases neck strain, and disrupts nerve flow to the head. See our article here.
  • Ergonomic headache: Poor workstation habits (e.g. sitting for too long in front of a computer or in meetings) contribute to muscle tension and spinal misalignment.
  • Stress headache: Prolonged emotional stress can manifest physically as headaches.

When the body is unable to adapt to stressors, neurological interference, irritation, and inflammation arise—often expressing as headaches. Your headache is not the problem. A headache is a whisper, a signal, that something within your body has changed; these messages are carried over your nervous system.

The Nerve System and Its Role

Your nerve system—especially the central nerve system (brain and spinal cord)—is your lifeline. It controls all body functions and communicates with every organ, muscle, tissue and cell. When there is interference, symptoms like headaches can appear. These signals are your body’s attempt to adapt and draw your attention. They are not enemies; they are messages.

Caring for your nervous system is key to adapting to life’s stressors. Chiropractors are neurological experts who adjust the structural housing of your central nerve system—the spine and cranium. Supporting your nerve system is a foundational step toward expressing optimal health.

Our philosophy is simple: empower people to become active participants in their own wellbeing, not passive recipients of external “fixes.” Headaches aren’t random. They are expressions of imbalance across the MOVE, EAT, THINK influences of life. Through chiropractic care and a different perspective, we can listen to what our bodies are really saying.

Next time a headache arises, instead of asking “What can I take?” — ask “What can I change?”
