Fever in Latin comes from the word febris meaning ‘to warm or to heat.’ And in Greek it comes from the word pyros meaning ‘fire or burning fire.’ A fever can be defined then as an increase in body temperature in relation to something within the body. Typically, the ‘normal’ body temperature is between 36.4-37.5 degrees Celsius and anything above that is deemed to be a fever… mild, high and so forth.

Many people think a fever is a response to an infection which is invading the body. This is very much a germ theory thought process. For me I am not a germ theorist… never have been. I believe we have everything inside of us to create health. We too could see an infection as a sign of sickness or a signal of health, but that is a whole other conversation. Back to fevers…

There are two camps in the management of a fever:

  1. Step in and intervene
  2. Do nothing; be still

The step in and intervene approach sees the fever as a sign of sickness – that the body has got it wrong in some way and that the escalating temperature is not normal. As a result something needs to be taken to bring the temperature down to ‘normal’. It is an approach that is driven by fear and indoctrinated ‘what if’ situations. A treatment is sort to create an illusion that ‘it’, the fever, is not there anymore… but in taking the medication the house is left to burn.

Let me give you an analogy…

Let’s say your house is on fire and there is an alarm which is linked to the local fire brigade. The fire brigade gets the alert, they jump in the truck, race to your house, jump out of the truck, race to the alarm, cut the wires, jump back in the truck and drive off…. leaving your house burning.

That is exactly what happens when a medication is taken/given to reduce something the body innately created.

The do nothing, be still approach sees the fever as a signal of health. This is a very different understanding of why the body has innately increased it’s core temperature. Let’s look at a fever in this way. In the 0-7 age group children will do the most amount of physical growth in their life time never to grow at that rate again. In order to grow the body utilises a number of innate processes. The hypothalamus and the endocrine(hormone) system are major players. The hypothalamus sits deep in the brain and regulates body temperature, hunger, thirst, sleep and mood to name a few. It is the main link between the endocrine (hormone) system and the nerve system. And it is always looking to keep you in balance which is referred to as homeostasis.

So for the child to grow and develop their endocrine (hormone) system is used. The hormones are released and the body’s chemistry says, ‘oh great hormones… growth alert coming!’ Then all the systems, organs, tissues and cells get set. The innate intelligence within says ‘ok let’s get to work!’ The hypothalamus says ‘I’ll increase the core temperature to initiate access to the hormones to release what is needed to grow and develop.’  Initiating access requires energy and energy produces heat – so we have heat generated internally by the hypothalamus increasing the core temperature so the body’s chemistry can access the hormones for growth and development, and we have heat generated from the energy as a result of doing the growth. All natural responses to the growth and development of a child. So doing nothing and being still and keeping your child comfortable is vitally important to the natural growth plan.

Even The Lancet one of the most respected and well-known medical journals suggests fevers are rarely dangerous and if dangerous are usually a result of a “pre-existing neurological abnormality.” This too can include neurological trauma. This puts emphasis on the importance of your child’s nerve system and having it checked for any neurological interference.

Your nerve system is the master communicating system of your body. There is not one thing you can do in your body without appropriate neurological function. Taking care of your nerve system, which will be a new concept to many, is vitality important. Your nerve system enables you to adapt to your environment – physically, chemically and emotionally – so taking care of it makes sense. Seeking out those that specialise in nerve health (e.g. chiropractors) will help with your adaptation to your life. It just makes sense to take care of it. And yes there are those who only see a chiropractor as a back doctor and someone you go to when in pain. That is a myth. Chiropractors have years and years of training and intense study in the neurology of the body. And the easiest way to access your nerve system is via your spine and cranium!

Instead of giving your child something to take something away you may wish to support your child in the following way:

  1. Adjustment: have their nerve system checked by a qualified chiropractor.
  2. Trust: your child has everything to adapt to life. As the parent you know your child better than anyone and will be able to determine the correct path for you and them.
  3. Rest: allow them to rest and sleep, checking on them often.
  4. Food: your child will most likely not want to eat. Remember the hypothalamus regulates hunger and thirst as well. So, when it is engaged in other activities like increasing heat to access the hormones for growth it is not going to trigger hunger and thirst as well because all it’s attention is on growth. Offer the fluids and food but manage your expectations on the amount that is consumed.
  5. Room temperature: Have your child, if old enough, to monitor their external temperature. In other words, don’t warm them up or cool them down or you’ll confuse the hypothalamus that regulates the body temperature. Keep them at room temperature.

When a child can move through their growth and development in a natural way, such as the steps above, you will notice extraordinary change take place. They will change in all manner of ways depending on the age. Changes you may observe include: height, food choice, dexterity, new words, language, sleep longer, new friend group, coordination, crawling, walking and so on and so forth. Endless changes.

The human body truly is remarkable.
