Life’s getting more convenient every year and statistics about increased life expectancy and ‘stamping out disease’ are proudly quoted. But is it really getting ‘better’ because of the pharmaceutical industry?

Today, as parents, we have incredible choice in the way we support our children’s growth. Combine that with our built-in desire to shield our children from pain or inconvenience, and the enormous marketing campaigns of the pharmaceutical companies, and it’s very easy to grab the ‘quick fix’ when our child seems to be showing signs of dis-ease.

What we sometimes miss in this mix is the motivation of those companies offering that quick fix. Sure, every business exists to turn a profit. But whether they do that ethically or not is another question altogether.

Let’s take a look at the current situation…

In early May this year, the Centres for Disease Control and prevention published a report that stated more than 10,000 two- and three-year-olds in the US have been prescribed medications such as Adderall and Ritalin for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Journalist Martha Rosenberg asks a pertinent question: ‘Why does the richest nation in the world have so many children afflicted with ADHD, conduct disorders, depression, “spectrum” disorders, oppositional defiant disorder, mixed manias, social phobias and bipolar disorder?’*

Well, drug companies have discovered that children are a lucrative market.

Think about it.

Parents tell their children, ‘Just take this. I know it’s yucky but I’ll give you a treat afterwards. You’ll feel better.’

Staff at the child’s school then are obliged to ensure young students take their medication. ‘Put this into your body and you’ll feel better.’

Doctors — authority figures — tell the parents and children that these drugs are good for them. ‘Put this into your body and you’ll feel better.’

Starting children on prescriptions and over the counter medications while they’re young builds a long-term customer base for the manufacturers of these medications. In the face of the known side-effects, including appetite, growth and sleep problems plus hallucinations and a variety of mental problems, Big Pharma is training our children to be compliant, lifelong drug users. ‘Put this into your body and you’ll feel better’ they say.

And then, when that child becomes a teenager (or, in some cases, simply turns ten years old) and starts putting illicit drugs into their body to feel ‘better’ we ask, ‘What do you think you are doing?’

The very good news is that there is another way. It’s far less expensive both on your finances and on your beautiful child’s system. And it empowers your child to be observant and inquisitive regarding their own expression of health.

It’s also, while awesomely intricate, very simple.

Firstly, let’s take a step back and get a big picture of the three different approaches to health listed below in no particular order. Once you’ve looked closely at them you’re in a position to choose the right approach for you and for your children.

Pharmaceutical companies selling over the counter medications or prescription medications sit in the allopathic approach. This view is a mechanical one that tells people to take something from outside their body and put it into their body to fix their body. If that ‘thing’ you’ve put inside you causes side-effects, they’ll address that by giving you something else to put inside your body to counteract the side effects. Or just tell you that it’s normal.

Then there’s an array of health professionals who prefer a natural approach compared to the chemically-manufactured pharmaceuticals. We call this the alternative approach. However, this is still an ‘outside-in’ approach as they will recommend a tincture, drops, or something else to put inside your body to ‘fix’ the problem.

Finally, there’s the alternate approach. Those who utilise this approach believe that the body is a regenerating, self-regulating, self-healing organism that simply requires clear channels of communication in the nerve system. Your body is constantly adapting to its environment and it’s your nervous system which coordinates that.

Simply put, making sure you and your child are regularly adjusted, making sure you’re giving your body the right fuel by eating correctly, getting plenty of exercise, sunlight and rest is a very solid beginning to expressing optimal health. That’s it.

Really? Is it that simple?

Yes.

It’s simple, however there’s also a lifetime of learning as we begin to understand how magnificent our bodies really are.

We can also begin to understand that we do not need to be motivated by fear, and recognise that health challenges and/or symptoms is to be expected as part of a growing, evolving body.

At different times in your life you may choose to sit in the allopathic approach. Or you might seek the input of an alternative health professional. Regardless of your approach in the moment, though, you can always build on your knowledge of your nerve system and the way in which your body repairs itself.

The most important thing is knowing that YOU are the one who makes the choice. You are the one best-equipped to teach your child the value of their body.

You are the one who knows your child and who can teach your child to recognise the signals their body sends them when they need, for instance, rest.

You are the one who can go with your child on a journey to learn how extravagantly intelligent our bodies are.

Just as we regularly take care of the outside of our body we need to take care of the inside. A system that is well-adjusted can communicate with itself and function as it should. Your child’s body is better equipped to deal with the challenges that come as part of everyday life.

The power that made the body has the power to heal it.

All it takes is neurological integrity, great organic food, movement, sunlight, rest and time!
